Description: Bovine abomasal (gut) organoids are used to study the parasite-host interaction with gastrointestinal nematodes. The organoids are exposed to live Ostertagia ostertagi larvae, which invade into the lumen of an organoid where they can reside for several hours. In this image we see the curled anterior part of a larvae leaving a bovine abomasal abomasum organoid by paracellular penetration of the apical surface in the organoid lumen. Organoid cell culture models like these allow us to investigate parasite-tissue interactions which were not possible before.
